3 Critical Mistakes People Make In A Street Fight

Abraham Lincoln Was a Street Fighting Man - Image Source Vice Magazine
No one every wants to learn to fight, then get involved in a street fight and lose. No one wants to get into a street fight for fun, and despite your attempts to learn martial arts, or any defense method, you will need to be prepared. You may be good in class. You may have a black belt. You may also be the best student from home, online, or in dojos. But when you end up getting hit by an individual, when someone wants to take your money, or life, you can't ask them to slow down so that you can get ready. It's for that reason, why this post has been written. This is going to discuss the 3 major mistakes that people make in a street fight. This is to help you understand that while I advocate self defense from various options, I also advocate being realistic. You are not Batman, You are Not Bruce Lee, and You are not going to be able to win every fight if you just master self defense. You need to be ready for mistakes, and these are some of the common ones.

Assuming People Will Fight You Fair and Straight Up

Regardless of where you are, if there is someone that is going to attack you, and you are involved in a street fight, the person that you are going to be facing off against is not going to be fair. They are not going to fight you with the same stances that you learn in classes for self defense. Street fighting is not like a tournament, and it is not like what you're learning. It's something that you are going to have seriously take under consideration. Street fights are not fair, and when someone is attacking or you decide to raise your fists, you will need to remember that. Mentally prepare for throwing out the rule book at first, and then isolating the person and stopping them. Self defense is not about putting yourself in certain stances and then moving. You have to ascertain the situation, then react fast, and sometimes without rules, and without predictable movements. If you break the rules of your training, to isolate a person so that they don't hurt you or others around you, that's not bad. Remember, when you learn to fight, you can take it to the streets but the goal is survival, more than anything else.

Hesitating To React or Push Through Your Momentum

Let's assume that you have been work with self defense lessons of any time. Whether you are learning kung fu, Judo, or any form, you will need to avoid hesitation. Do not, under any circumstances, wait for an opening. Do not hesitate to fight back. You are more ready than you realize, and honestly, when someone decides they are going to come at you with any force, you have to react, you have to forget about everything else, and literally change things up. Your goal is to disarm someone, and to hold them there until help arrives or you could call 911 or anything else. The goal here is to defend yourself with necessary force. The training that you have done needs to be second nature. When you learn to fight, you need to react, and don't wait. people forget this. People sometimes wait for an opening, and they wait for themselves to end up in a particular stance. The person that is going to fight you will not wait for you to be in proper stance to punch back or fight. You need to just fight back. React, use your training, and react, simple as that. Hesitation, regardless of how great you are in fighting, will be your downfall in a street fight, it just will. Move without having to get ready or get into a stance. Never signal that you're a fighter, rather, react, and move into the flow of your training. No signals, no warnings, react.

Signaling That You Want To Fight

Never show off that you want to fight, never let anyone know that you know how to fight, and always rememebr that a street fight is not fair. If someone is going to attack, they are going to attack. If someone wants to fight you, they may be boisterous, and may be loud, and get in your face. Step back, and react based on what they do, never just pounce. You have to make it seem like you don't want to fight, and don't push back, don't yell, don't do anything like that. Stand your ground, and fight back as a defense mechanism. you do not want to be the aggressor in many instances. Remember, a street fight is not fair, and most often, attackers are not going to know that you are capable of fighting back and will be shocked when you do. That is if you give them no signal that you want to fight, or can fight. You must give NO signals that you have any background in self defense. If you learn to fight, let no one know, even if you are provoked, simply go from calm to 60 miles per hour in a matter of one movement, and do not let yourself hesitate.

Chances are, you are not going to get into a street fight like that of a video game. You are not going to get into a stance and face off against some Fu Manchu dude at a temple. Unfortunately, that's just not going to be a common place. You will not fight someone that is going to be fair, etc. Street fights are common, but they are not like the video games, or movies, or anything like that. They are over in seconds, and they can be dangerous things, but if you learn proper technique and practice you can survive and win. When you learn to fight, you learn more than just the process of punching someone in the face, you learn to survive and even win in a street fight.
