77 Year Old Defends Himself From Robbery – Learn Self Defense

Trevor Weston, 77 years old, was doing his normal routine going to the ATM. He went to his bank and everything seemed fine. The 77 year old did his normal routine, then after he walked away from the machine, a robber showed up. An armed masked man showed up and demanded money from Weston.

Weston could’ve easily gave him money, and not have been hurt or anything, but instead, he squared up. If you have ever thought about learning self defense, here is another example of why it is so important. You could be going to an ATM when a robber shows up just like it did for Mr. Weston, and they could very well demand your money.

What happened in this case? Weston squared up, put his hands up, and fought the attacker straight ahead. There is video footage of this, and you can see Weston land at least one punch to the chin, which wasn’t exactly a haymaker, but it was enough to stun the robber, and get him to start pulling back, and eventually run away. That’s right, a 77 year old man stopped an armed robber by simply using simple self defense techniques.

You can learn the same thing. If you look at this story closer, and watch the video of Mr. Weston’s defense, you will see that when you learn self defense, you’re not just learning some archaic kung fu, you’re learning real world defense systems. This is a prime example of what you need to survive in a real world situation. Squaring up, throwing hands, and watching a robber flee is exactly the thing that self defense is made for, and works as in this case.

“Armed with a pencil and covering his face, the attacker told him: “Give me your money and card or I’ll stab you.”
But CCTV outside the Sainsbury’s supermarket in Roath showed the flat-capped pensioner fight back, squaring up to Collins and punching him twice in the face.
Prosecutor Timothy Evans told the court: “To deliberately target an obviously elderly gentleman alone at twilight is not only an aggravating feature but is also plainly a cowardly attack.
“Well, in this case the CCTV shows that this particular coward picked on the wrong man.
“He wanted the victim’s cash. Instead he got a left hook.”

How Not To Fail At Learning Self Defense

There are a lot of people that will be attempting to learn self defense today. There are schools, online classes, and many books that you can look into that will help you on your quest to learn. However, these are merely tools to help you get to where you want to be in terms of self defense. You may not be able to get far if you fall for the issues that many people fall for and into. That being said, consider the following notes on how not to fail at learning self defense, at any age.

Just Read The Manuals

There are a lot of books on how to learn self defense. If you purchase one, you’re going to want to read it carefully, but not in the traditional sense. These are not books that you read left to right and you’re done. Instead, you’ll need to read it once for leisure, and then dissect it with the lessons that they are trying to show you, and practice over time.

Practice All The Time

When you go to a school to learn, you are going to spend one-on-one time with a teacher. They are going to show you the positions, and where to move your body, but it is important that you practice. You cannot get better or even confident with the knowledge that you will get from books, or anything else if you don’t practice. The same goes for learning a new language, or music, anything that you want to do in the world of self defense, or anything else requires your attention, and that means practicing a great deal of time.

Keep At It

There is no fast track to mastering anything in the world of martial arts. Yes, there are some that are more talented than others, an some that will pick up their forms faster, but that is not necessarily you in every case. Everyone learns at different paces, so if you don’t get yourself into fight shape in a month or two, that’s ok, sometimes it takes longer. It may take you years to master certain aspects of self defense, but the goal is to keep learning. Your confidence will grow, and you will be at another level, if you just keep at it. Don’t give up.
