There are a lot of people that will be attempting to learn self defense today. There are schools, online classes, and many books that you can look into that will help you on your quest to learn. However, these are merely tools to help you get to where you want to be in terms of self defense. You may not be able to get far if you fall for the issues that many people fall for and into. That being said, consider the following notes on how not to fail at learning self defense, at any age.
Just Read The Manuals
There are a lot of books on how to learn self defense. If you purchase one, you’re going to want to read it carefully, but not in the traditional sense. These are not books that you read left to right and you’re done. Instead, you’ll need to read it once for leisure, and then dissect it with the lessons that they are trying to show you, and practice over time.
Practice All The Time
When you go to a school to learn, you are going to spend one-on-one time with a teacher. They are going to show you the positions, and where to move your body, but it is important that you practice. You cannot get better or even confident with the knowledge that you will get from books, or anything else if you don’t practice. The same goes for learning a new language, or music, anything that you want to do in the world of self defense, or anything else requires your attention, and that means practicing a great deal of time.
Keep At It
There is no fast track to mastering anything in the world of martial arts. Yes, there are some that are more talented than others, an some that will pick up their forms faster, but that is not necessarily you in every case. Everyone learns at different paces, so if you don’t get yourself into fight shape in a month or two, that’s ok, sometimes it takes longer. It may take you years to master certain aspects of self defense, but the goal is to keep learning. Your confidence will grow, and you will be at another level, if you just keep at it. Don’t give up.
